Search Engine Optimization (SEO): What Does It Mean for You?

by Teri Kojetin on May 3, 2012

If you are a small business owner, writer, service provider, or blogger, then SEO should be one of your priorities. However, it can be confusing to understand what it is and how to use it to your advantage.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, but what does it mean exactly? When people type in a keyword or phrase to search for websites on search engines such as Google or Yahoo, you want your website or blog to be one of the first sites listed. In order for this to happen you need to be sure to use the right keywordslinks and tags on your site when writing articles, blog posts, or any content. If you look at the preceding sentence you will see words that are blue. I have linked these to different articles about each of these three aspects of using these in SEO.

I want to focus on keywords in this article since that is the main way we search for topic. Here is a simple, easy-to-understand explanation of SEO on Search Engine Land.

So how do you choose keywords that will drive traffic to your site? Think about the words and phrases you type when searching for something. Think about what your site focuses on and what words people will use that would bring them to your site. You want words that will describe your site. When you write a post the title is especially important. Make sure your keyword and/or phrases appear in there as well as in the body of your post.

For example, in this article some of the keywords I used include SEO, search, what does it mean, keywords, article, posts, etc. I also try to mention small businesses and writers in my articles and posts because that is my target audience. I like to use the keywords e-books and social media as those are areas I focus on.

Start by implementing keywords that will reach the audience you want to find you online. From there you can learn other aspects of SEO. For example reading at sites such as SEOMOZ or lovetoknow business. When you add content to your website always remember your audience and your focus and weave your keywords and phrases in with them in mind.
